Our Commitment to Diversity, ORISE Educational and Research Experiences

THE ORISE COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is committed to increasing diversity in science, mathematics, engineering, and other technical fields. We believe that diversity is a strength in any setting, especially in our nation's premier science and technology centers, where ORISE provides educational opportunities for tomorrow's scientists and engineers. Therefore, it is our mission to attract a widely diverse applicant pool for our federal sponsors who offer education and training experiences. To that end, we pledge to reach out to all corners of the academic community, in all geographic locations, to all types of institutions, students, and faculty to make our fellowships, scholarships, internships, and research experiences available to all qualified individuals.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
It is the ORISE policy to recruit an applicant pool that reflects the diversity of our nation and to place participants without regard to race, age, gender, religion, color, national origin, mental or physical disability, or special disabled or Vietnam Era veteran status.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH MINORITY EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

The federal government, through specific presidential executive orders, encourages interactions with federally designated minority education institutions (MEI), which include historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), Hispanic-serving institutions (HIS), and tribal colleges. The following programs are designed to promote collaboration and to support students and faculty from these types of institutions:

DHS Summer Faculty and Student Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions- The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking applicants for summer research appointments for faculty and student research teams from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Each research team consists of one faculty and one or two students. Research is conducted during the summer at universities affiliated with DHS Centers of Excellence. At the end of the summer, faculty participants are encouraged to apply for up to $50,000 in follow-on funding. The intent of the program is to provide research opportunities to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at MSIs in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS. In addition, the program is designed to provide faculty and students with limited DHS research experience an opportunity to understand the mission and research needs of DHS and make advances in research areas of importance to DHS, while strengthening the talent pool of scientists and engineers.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Historically Black Colleges and Universities Faculty Research Participation- opportunities to participate in ongoing Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC)research and development

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Historically Black Colleges and Universities Student Research Participation- opportunities to participate in ongoing Nuclear Regulatory Commission research and development

Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Oak Ridge Associated Universities HBCU/MEI Faculty Summer Research Program- opportunities to collaborate on specific research projects at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to foster long-term relationships with the laboratory

FORMAL AGREEMENTS WITH MINORITY EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

To strengthen its working relationships with institutions that serve large numbers of students from demographic groups underrepresented in technical fields, ORISE is pursing the development of formal agreements that identify respective roles in the recruitment of applicants for the programs it administers. The agreements are intended to improve the flow of information and lead to increased participation by students and faculty. For more information about entering into such a memorandum of agreement with ORISE, contact Libby Kittrell at kittrell@orau.gov.
